WG Commodities leverages technology to provide consumer credit to self-employed businesses in the informal sector, beginning in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. The project is designed to meet the high demand for home appliances among petty traders and self-employed individuals by giving them the opportunity to purchase essential items on credit. Customers receive the product immediately and then repay daily or weekly over a chosen period, helping them support both business operations and quality of life. Our market survey and operational analysis show that software-driven registration, Know Your Customer (KYC) checks, and field sales coordination are essential to managing consumer credit efficiently. WG Commodities is built to formalize and streamline this process through a mobile app and USSD short code, enabling order management, cashless payment collection, and supplier collaboration. The market is split into formal sector consumer credit, where salaries are deducted directly through employer agreements, and informal sector consumer credit, where businesses often wait until full repayment before receiving products. WG Commodities addresses this gap by serving the informal sector with a more practical, structured, and accessible credit model.
